Join us on Tuesday, February 8th at 12 PM EST for the first Library Lunch Hour of the Year! We will be joined with documentary filmmaker and President of Balestra Media, Christina DiPasquale, and Centro Library Manager, Aníbal Arocho, as they discuss the groundbreaking PBS series executive produced and hosted by Humberto Cintrón, Realidades. Realidades aired from 1972 to 1977 and was the first national Latinx public affairs television series to document Latinx life, arts, and entertainment. Ms. DiPasquale is working on the documentary Barrio Television, telling the untold story of the history and impact of Realidades and has worked extensively with the Humberto Cintrón/Realidades papers housed at Centro. After the discussion, Aníbal and Christina will open the floor to the audience for a Q&A.

Bios

Christina DiPasquale is the founder and CEO of Balestra Media, specializing in multimedia storytelling for social justice campaigns centered on the perspectives of historically marginalized groups. Short documentaries that she executive produced for the Public Welfare Foundation and the Youth First Initiative have been screened by local groups to support decarceration across the country. Christina led social impact and political media strategy for the documentary series “Truth and Power,” and films including the Oscar-nominated documentary Dirty Wars, Robin Wright’s When Elephants Fight and Robert Greenwald’s Unmanned. Christina has media-trained and represented whistleblower Chelsea Manning, youth in Ferguson, clergy in Charlottesville and refugee and immigrant families, sharing their stories. She has been a strategic communications consultant for organizations, including Free Press, MediaJustice, the National Hispanic Media Coalition, and the American Civil Liberties Union, working toward racial justice in media.

Aníbal Arocho is the Library Manager at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies Library & Archive at CUNY Hunter College. He manages library reference services and a growing collection of over 18,000 items. He holds a Masters of Science in Library and Information Science from the Pratt Institute.
